Rock N Roll Wrestling are strongly established in the Illawarra area as the premier place for family-friendly pro wrestling. They've done some travelling around different areas, but Wollongong and its surrounds are generally home for Rock N' Roll.

One of the trips away from the Gong was approximately a year ago, on the eve of AEW Grand Slam Australia in Queensland. Rock N' Roll went to the iconic Caxton Hotel for a rare 18+ show, with the big draw being former NRL and WWE star Daniel Vidot, known in wrestling circles as Xyon Quinn. He brought along former Broncos captain Alex Glenn, and they wrestled in a fun showcase in front of 400+ fans in the Caxton carpark.

This Australia Day weekend marked Xyon's return to Rock N' Roll. He's been plying his trade in All Japan Pro Wrestling, impressing many and recently held the AJPW Tag Team Championship alongside Oddyssey. Rock N Roll's first show of the weekend was their first outdoor show in almost 5 years, at the Rock N Roll Academy in Unanderra.

Let's do this!

------------

It's a HOT day here in the Gong. My pasty ass lathered on the sunscreen. In a stroke of luck, our seats were in a shady area, but the heat was there to be sure!

Ring announcer Patrick hypes the crowd for the show. Interestingly, very little response when he asked, "Who's here to see Xyon?" but when he mentioned the rookies, a big pop. So, a lot of friends or family of the newer wrestlers, not necessarily a typical wrestling crowd. Hopefully, this show has them coming back for more!

Match 1: Andrew Vega vs. Zesty Zane

We've got a little shuffling off the card here, as Vega was originally set to wrestle veteran and owner of Rock N' Roll, Hunter PS Hayes, and Zane was set for the rookies gauntlet. Not sure why the changes were made, but certainly a big spotlight for the charismatic newcomer Zane.

Vega asserted himself in the early going with his size and power, but Zane flustered him with some unorthodox moves, such as a cheeky smack on the backside and a little hip swivel before landing an enziguri. Zane uses his speed and flew around to great effect, until he was caught in a crossbody and slammed. A huge spinebuster slam would hand the win to the Wolf Man.

Winner: Andrew Vega

Post-match, a determined Zane promised the crowd that he would not stop, and got a nice reaction on his exit. It was a nice showing, and is a showing of faith in the popularity of Zesty Zane, trusting him to set the tone and energy of the show in the opening spot. Follow him on his socials, he's doing his 100K journey!

Match 2: Maxx Damage vs. Big Fudge

Maxx is one of the more entertaining characters at Rock N Roll, constantly mouthing off to the crowd and providing some great interactions. He's facing a man who has a lot of history at Rock N Roll, the brand new PWA Champion, Big Fudge!

Fudge is determined to hit Maxx with the Butt Punch in the early going, but the would-be film star bails from the ring and looks to fight another day. Fudge goads him back to the ring with a few insults, but the one that really drives him back in, "you're not even a good actor!" An enraged Damage returns, and then agrees to show his acting prowess in a hilarious mid-match break, where Fudge plays director and Maxx does different scenarios and dances. It ends when Fudge tells Maxx to act like he's asleep, and gets a near fall. Brilliant!

Maxx comes back and actually hits some strong moves, including a Soylent Green II, I believe? Fudge rallies and lands the Butt Punch to great effect, followed by the chokeslam, for the win. All is right in the world.

Winner: Big Fudge

Honestly such an entertaining match, I love character-driven breaks from the norm like that. Super memorable and fun. One that I can't wait to watch back when Rock N Roll uploads these shows!

We see Andrew Vega with his bags, getting the hell out of there early. He had good reason, since he was double booked for the day and heading up to All-Star Wrestling in Padstow! Putting that work in.

Match 3: Xyon vs. Morgan Rose & The Dogs

"Heartless" Morgan Rose sends his Dogs- masked anonymous followers- to do his bidding and fight the towering Xyon on his behalf. Xyon powers through them and invites Morgan into the ring with a smile, which he declines. So, Xyon is like a wrecking ball running through the Dogs, including an absolutely brutal looking lawn dart into the second turnbuckle.

Morgan finally gets involved after a cat and mouse game between himself, Xyon and the Dogs, which sees Xyon running around the outside and colliding with the ring post. More shenanigans as Morgan is able to hit an undetected low blow, followed by a running knee, but it's not enough to get the win. Xyon back on offense hitting some high impact moves, including a Death Valley Driver and a back suplex into a cutter, and he stacks the opposition to put this one away!

Winner: Xyon

This showcased Xyon well as a force, as a wrecking ball, ahead of his title challenge against Lee Morrow the next day at Campbelltown. His intensity- and for some fans, his good looks- won the crowd over.

Intermission. Time for a sausage sizzle. Can't get much more Aussie on Australia Day weekend than that!

Match 4: Gauntlet Match- Otis vs. RNR Trainees

The first entrant in the gauntlet is Jason Graves, who has size and a good presence, playing to the crowd- who were a bit lukewarm to this point in the show. He has some moments, hitting high impact strikes and a flying clothesline from the top, but ultimately Otis means business and has the experience, putting Graves away after a cannonball.

Next up, it's our resident cowboy, Cash Collins. He's game, but outgunned here, as after a brief flurry of clotheslines, Otis nails a big boot. A follow up seated senton drives the air out of Cash, and it's good for the 3!

Here to avenge his dad, it's Rock N' Roll's youngest star, Adam Collins! He's young and not the biggest guy, but he's got crazy speed and athleticism, hitting a very impressive flying headscissors. He then takes it to the next level with a wild suicide dive to the outside, wiping out Otis and almost the entire front row as the barricade buckles! A star-making performance for Collins, but it won't be a winning one, as he soon falls to the GTS. Awesome effort.

Last but not least, Jordan enters the fray! He's got a MMA background apparently, and almost upsets Otis with an Imanari roll into a heel hook. The Grub desperately grabs the ropes. It's a skill set Otis seemingly wasn't prepared for, but he's got tricks up his sleeve. He loosens his boot, and when Jordan goes for the ankle lock, the boot comes off! Shades of Eddie Guerrero at WrestleMania 20. Otis connects with a GTS on Jordan, and that's all she wrote.

Winner: Otis

Post-match, Otis looks to teach Jordan a lesson with a steel chair, but the rest of the rookies- including Zesty Zane- make the save. They declare themselves the future of Rock N Roll, and they're coming for Otis' spot! The future absolutely does look bright with these guys.

Main Event: RNR Championship- Eric Fisher vs. Lee Morrow (c)

Fisher's plan is to "make Rock N Roll Wrestling great again", as he comes out in a red shirt and cap bearing that very message. He chatises the crowd for singing the refrain for Morrow's theme, "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again..."

Morrow brings the fight to Fisher, including some blistering chops- although as some fans complained, we couldn't hear them as well as usual, since Fisher was wrestling in his shirt. So Morrow pulled the shirt off and landed a couple more chops properly. That left a mark!

Despite Fisher's virtuous talk of making wrestling great, he began stooping to some underhanded tactics. Referee Ben went down and Fisher wasted little time in getting the ring bell. However, it doesn't work, and Morrow lands the Widowmaker, dragging a semi-conscious Ben over to make the cover, and that's it!

Winner: Lee Morrow

A good match, hurt a little by the crowd not giving it the reaction it deserved. Since it wasn't their family or friends, as was the case in the rookies gauntlet, they didn't really come to the party. God bless Brooke, always the loudest in any wrestling crowd, doing her damndest to carry the energy through. Fisher interacted well with her to try and generate some heat.

Speaking of heat...post match, Lee thanks the crowd for coming out in the hot weather, and calls the rookies back for a final curtain call, putting them over as the future to a nice reaction.

Overall Thoughts

A fun show, I've wanted RNR to do an outdoor show for the longest time after the first one in 2021 was so good. This admittedly wasn't at the same level- I think the weather got to the wrestlers and the crowd. The afternoon start was a good idea to try, but after experiencing it I think the traditional evening/night time spot would've worked better.

That said, I think we saw some definite promise with the trainees- fresh new talent is always a good thing, and they all performed in a way that I believe would bring back the casual fan, not just their loved ones that came to support them. Great energy and it's obvious they're all working hard at the Rock N' Roll Academy!

Overall Score: 7.5/10

We'll be back with the Campbelltown show review in the next article!

Until next time, take care,

Mick
